Skylark Red Blend Red Belly North Coast 2019

Skylark Red Blend Red Belly North Coast 2019

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a RED BELLY?!?! 92 POINTS, under $13, and making its GLORIOUS return to the Last Bottle arena...SKYLARK!!!

What’s it been…two years? Three? However long has passed…Skylark, I have missed you! This has been a personal favorite, cellar-defending, over-delivering, simply KILLER Cali-Rhône for YEARS – made with clonal material sourced from Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, for Pete’s sake! John Lancaster and Robert Perkins are two Bay Area sommeliers who catapulted the famed Boulevard restaurant in SF to superstardom, and when they got together to make a bit of wine from some VERY old vines and singularly great vineyards some years back…they flat-out ROCKED our world! For almost 25 years, this partnership has thrived, producing a portfolio of delectably fresh, stylistically pure, and unimaginably food-friendly iterations of many of California’s top vineyard sites. They never make a ton, and they always focus on sustainable and thoughtful family growers, and their prices are downright tasty!

We’ve done what we do, and sprinkled some magical Last Bottle MSG on this deal to make it even TASTIER! I mean, UNDER $13?! Say WHAT?!?! Three vineyards, spread across the cool climates and high elevations of Mendocino, with each site providing a single varietal for the blend. 45% Syrah, 32% Carignan, and 23% Grenache, and just downright DELICIOUS!

The smoky, cool Syrah notes of blueberries and violets, complemented with meaty, roasted herb wildness, and juicy strawberry, and red raspberry that just pulses and vibes across your bewildered tongue, finishing with this cooling minty-ness and pulverized gravel minerality – and then hanging around with tingly peppercorns and spice notes for far, FAR longer than any TWELVE DOLLAR bottle of California sunshine has any right to do!!! Huzzah, good people! This is drinking absolutely RIDONKULOUS here and now – you’d never guess it was so ridiculously priced…and none of the dozens of people you sagely pour this for again and again over the next several months will ever guess either!

An all-time MEGA-STEAL that once again shows why Skylark’s RED BELLY belongs in YOUR belly! While it lasts!!!
