(Number nine…number 9…yuck.) Anywho…there are some powerfully dark forces at work today. Biggie Smalls — died March 9th, twenty-NINE years ago. Little Bow Wow — born March 9th, thirty-NINE years ago. I mean….SPOOKY!!!
All of that is to say…it’s MYSTERY TIME!!! ONLY $39!!! Yes! We’re taking this deal the whole nine yards, and this GORGEOUS, old-school, delightfully structured, and unimaginably complex mountain-cab blend is dressed to the nines and ready to party like it is 1999! That’s the sort of savings you’d give up your firstborn for, heck…even the very FIRST firstborn if I had to!!!
The long-time winemaker here studied alongside one of Spain’s best ever winemakers, and one of its greatest families, before plying his trade at an ICONIC 1st Growth Bordeaux house, and then working under a man that most historians would say is the single most important winemaker in Napa Valley history! Not too shabby, right? A sprawling property of a few hundred acres atop the hillsides of Napa, planted mostly to the traditional grapes of Bordeaux. Those grapes are blended from the best parcels and the best barrels to make this classic wine — filled with terroir and lively earthiness, with perfectly balanced berries and cherries, wildly exotic spices, and savory herb complements. It’s BOLD, and dusty, with delicious Bing cherries, and sweet rosemary, with an iron-laden backbone of impressive structure, and a wild and savage woodland character that makes me think more along the lines of Gran Reserva Rioja than anything else — but that doesn’t fully satisfy either. It’s akin, yet not quite Bordeaux — but it’s certainly not your prototypical Napa Cab Blend, either. It’s unique, memorable, and stands completely apart — like an Irishman with his hands in his pockets when the British Monarch pops in for a visit!
This is a somm-favorite, high-end restaurant mainstay that is RARELY seen at retail. I’ve been a windmill-sized mega-fan for DECADES — and a recent visit up a long and winding mountain road, way, WAY off the beaten path, reminds me just why this estate is so exceptional. No other vineyard borders it, just an isolated bowl with stunning terraces, and rolling hills, looking out across the valley and, on a clear day, all the way down towards the San Francisco Bay! 96 POINTS, people! Incredible savings, and an ALL-TIME great Last Bottle MYSTERY!
