I mean…that’s worth a Huzzah or two, at least! 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Mondavi family’s Animo Estate off Atlas Peak, and their Oso Vineyard off Ink Grade on Howell Mountain. Primo sites, for utterly ELECTRIC, heart-stopping juice…and baddie drives the pace like a Pierce Brown novel. (Where my Howlers at?) Anywho…The 2022 vintage brings on the considerable talents of ROCKSTAR winemaker, Philippe Melka, consulting alongside Robert’s grandson, Rob – who’s led the winemaking here since 2012.
The result? The layered lushness and plentiful plushness you’d expect from Monsieur Philippe – with the imposing power and highly structured framework that these Vaca Mountain sites bring to the table. Full-bodied, unapologetically CLASSIC Napa Cab to its berry-laden core – this is all about sultry red and black currants, with blackberries, and mulberries, followed by plums, and toasted asian spices like star anise and cardamom, plus this supremely decadent polish of molten chocolate, and vanilla bean, with a dusting of mocha powder for good measure.
This really is a crackerjack Cabernet in the classic, bold, and NOT FOR THE SHY style of the Cult-iest of Cult-y Napa Cabs. Put yourself in the mind of those strong, rock-solid, always-killing-it wines such as Phelps Insignia, Mondavi To Kalon Reserve, Staglin, Forman....or maybe even a little Stag’s Leap Cask 23. Cabernets of structure, depth, power and elegance. This wine is already cruising into its perfect drinking window, and with every swirl of the glass, and every single sip…it just gets better and better! UNDER $100 is an Ocean’s Eleven-worthy heist!
