95 POINTS! The name CATENA immediately makes wine lovers think of Argentina...and Malbec...but not today! 100% Sangiovese, from a single vineyard in the heart of Tuscany, crafted by Ernesto Catena – over $100 OFF and simply “drop-dead gorgeous”!
The Catena family is synonymous with the greatest Malbecs in the world, and Ernesto grew up amongst these vines, the heir to his father Nicolás Catena Zapata’s empire. But his artistic passions and desire to travel the world soon saw him bouncing all over the globe, eventually taking him to the family’s Italian roots. Now, just a few miles east of Florence, he’s growing some roots all his own – and this expressive, concentrated, and incredibly powerful Pian di Marroni puts a new stamp on the great wines of Tuscany.
The name translates to “Chestnut Fields” – an homage to the dense forest in Valdisieve where this vineyard sits at 350 meters above sea level. The production is savagely minuscule – we’re talking about 333 cases made. The fact that any exists outside of Italy (and maybe a handful in Argentina) is in itself a miracle – and we got everything allotted for the entire USA!!!
Good thing we know a guy in Italy, right?!?! One sip, and you’re gonna be HOOKED – I’m talking Vaudeville act, absolute bombing the stage kind of hooked…and for UNDER $50, you’re gonna wish you could score this on repeat! Black truffles, and dusty cherries, with terracotta clay, and charred rosemary with roasted plums…WOWZA! It’s inky and impressively structured, with a fine, grippy tannin structure that has this clinging to every corner of your mouth. With a bit of air, this gorgeous note of violets and lilacs emerges, with red currants and tart huckleberries, uplifted by spearmint and smoldering sage. The complexity is downright labyrinthian, and immediately had me picturing David Bowie’s Goblin King performing sleight of hand with his crystal ball. That’s a good thing, folks – but not nearly as good as this EPIC price! Normally $150, but we worked out a deal to get every…last…bottle in the USA for the cray-cray low price of just $49!!! For a 95 POINT phenom and a globally-recognized name like Catena – that is simply too good to pass up!
