Right? RIGHT???? The simply legendary Sabon family has been revered as Châteauneuf-du-Pape princes, pioneers, and perfectionists for DECADES! Grenache masters, with access to some of the tippy-top BEST plots of old vine, gnarly soils, and cobbled stones of CdP’s upper plateau — and the sort of traditional winemaking to make it all SHINE! 2021 may have initially been considered a “difficult” growing season for CdP…but I say bring…it…on!!! A cooler year in the new normal of Southern France’s already warm climate — giving way to leaner, meaner, and racier than ever! It’s old vine Grenache, with bits of Syrah and Mourvedre, sooooo succulent and juicy, but definitely not shy on horsepower! Imagine if a top Burgundy house got a chance to play with world-class Grenache grapes…and you’re entering my orbit of what my friends at Janasse are cooking.
And it’s straight FIRE!
From just 15 hectares in 1967 to nearly 90 today — this is no longer a small producer — but a true CdP JUGGERNAUT that sits as the cream of the crop for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Each of the over 60 plots is farmed sustainably, and harvested painstakingly by hand, with each lot vinified separately — then blended with the utmost care and precision. The result is FLAT OUT spectacular…and quite honestly, my touch-blue-make-it-true FAVORITE iteration of this cuvée to date!
