Just when I thought I had reached my peak, and this day of wonder and bewilderment couldn’t possibly get any better — a little 98 POINT Janasse CdP MAGNUM comes bursting into my life! Just in case you’ve been living under a rock…Janasse is one of the world’s foremost champions of Grenache, not to mention one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's greatest stars, and this remarkable Cuvée Chaupin just might be one of the best CDPs I’ve ever tasted! Maybe it’s the OVER 100-year-old Grenache vines in La Crau? Or maybe it’s the taut precision and cool, James Bond elegance of the less-than-ideal 2022 growing season – a cooler vintage that is hallmarked by floral prettiness, and zippy acidity, with angular structure. Whatever the case – this ain’t no juicy jam box of a Cdp, that’s for sure! But still…absolutely LOADED, like an 80s stockbroker, with frenetic energy, and furious intensity. This guy KNOWS how to party. Soooo goood!!!
Violets, and black tea, rose petals, lavender, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries galore! There’s this salty, iron ore and crushed rock minerality, and this beautiful freshness of raw cedar, and camphor, with tingly orange zest, and this uplifting essence of star jasmine. Uber cool, incredibly pretty stuff for CdP, that has plenty of ripe fruit character, without any sun-dried heaviness or jammy aspects. This is such a baby that I’m looking for that hypnotic scent on the soft spot on top of the cork – but really, it’s here in the glass. Decant this, or lay it down for drinking over the next two plus decades, or just pour a glass and swirl…and swirl…and keep swirling until this beauty whispers in your face and tells you she’s ready.
It’ll be worth the wait…I promise you! 98 POINTS! While it lasts!!!
** The legendary Aimé Sabon started the estate in the 70s, handing it over to his children – who have continued to impress – the critics, other CdP estates, the whole of France, and grizzled ol’ wine slingers like us! They’ve cracked the 100 point mark more than a few times, and just seem to be on a never-ending ROLL of ginormous proportions. Collectable stuff, indeed! **
