It’s tiny. It’s inky. It’s a little green (literally.) It’s PETIT VERDOT! A historic blending grape in Bordeaux, adding a bit of BITE to make those bold and beastly beauties pop, pop, POP! Need a little OOMPH in the mid-palate? Petit Verdot. Deep, dark color infusion? Petit Verdot. Floral lift of violets? Petit Verdot. Structure for days? You guessed it…PETIT VERDOT. This little powerhouse grape does soooo many things, but you almost never see it as the stand-alone varietal. The answer is in the name, of course. This “Little Green” variety was always late to ripen in the continental climate of Bordeaux, but now that it has explored the world like a 20-year-old Australian – that’s not really a problem anymore!
This 92 POINT silky and supple BEAUTY shows what a warmer climate and absolutely pristine growing season can do with the grape. All the floral, and the fruit, all the texture, and saturation, richness, and velvety-ness, without the lockjaw BITE of a junkyard pitbull. This 2023 Arbuckle Ridge pours jet black and glistening, with violets, plums, cocoa powder, and sweet baking spices. On the tongue, it is liquid cashmere, infused with lightly browned butter, and the warm vanilla and cinnamon spice of winter shortbread cookies, plus a little nod to the graphite and volcanic mineral character the grape is prized for in Bordeaux. Arbuckle Ridge is a new project from Scott Saunders, from the very vineyard he grew up in. Planted by his parents in 1992, Scott would sneak out as a teen to watch harvest in the vineyards, and the vibrancy and frenetic energy of harvest crews across Paso Robles inspired him to join up and dive in.
