Three cheers for CARIGNAN! An ancient grape, and one that deserves way, WAY more love from everyone! Originally migrating up from northern Spain, taking root in southern France, and then becoming one of the most important and widely planted grapes in all of France! In fact, until Merlot dethroned it in the 1980s, this was the NUMERO UNO grape in France, and had already migrated around the world as a staple grape in nearly every New World wine region. Napa and Sonoma plantings go back to the mid-1800s, and RIDGE is widely believed to have crafted the first ever varietal bottling for the Golden State back in the early 1970s. The grape has trucked along quietly ever since, and I think it is LONG OVERDUE for a chance on the main stage.
So…here…we…GOOOOOOO!!! UNDER $13 for a Wine Advocate 92 POINT red from a single vineyard originally planted back in 1918…I mean, that’s a STEAL!!! Most of these vines are 65-70 years old, with an infusion of new plantings in 2015 to give some bright and robust fruit burst character, but dagnabit…is this ever DELICIOUS! Master Somm turned winemaker Chris Miller has done it again – and this beauty sings with wild blueberry and strawberry fruits, followed by dusty, lightly scorched herbs like rosemary and thyme, and tart little plums, then dried cherries, and a kiss of grapefruit peel, and compressed watermelon, with a final dash of hibiscus tea. Crazy crushable, but complex enough to both age and match perfectly with some hearty fare…anybody wanna head to Yountville’s Mustards Grill for their famous Mongolian Pork Chops?! This is gonna CRUSH with that little bite of heaven. Aw man, that’s it…that’s my plan for Sunday night. See you there!
